Shimmering Diamonds

4 May

Fellow Quilters,

Welcome to my second post today!  My regular subscribers are probablymyblockisin15_95

scratching their heads right now, thinking “Did she fall and bump her head?” because I NEVER post twice in one day.  Well, you know what they say – Never say never.  There is a very good reason for 2 posts today – I am wearing 2 hats as Northcott and I participate in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 15 blog tour, taking place this week.  My first post was for Northcott’s participation as a sponsor of the tour.  This post is because I have a block in the issue – woop-woop!

#1454 Diamond Cut block

#1454 Diamond Cut block

My block is #1454 Diamond Cut, made with Northcott’s uber-delicious Artisan Spirit Shimmer. It has just a hint of metallic gold – enough to make it shimmer (haha) but not enough to make it at all challenging to work with.  I have made numerous quilts with Shimmer, and they all turn out drop-dead gorgeous because of the fabric.

The Diamond Cut block is similar to the block that I used for my Bevels quilt featured in the November 2015 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts.

Bevels quilt from November 2015 McCall's Quick Quilts

However, I added corners that create a secondary design when multiple blocks are sewn together.  Using 2 different values of one color gives the distinct impression of shading in the fabrics, creating an optical illusion.

Quilt #1

Quilt #1

In this alternate colorway version, I used multiple colors and placed them on a black ground, using one color (gray) for the corner pieces.

Quilt #2

Quilt #2

In the 3rd version, I used a light (cream) ground instead of black as above.

Quilt #3

Quilt #3

I also played with a few other blocks in Volume 15 that had a central on-point square motif.  While there were several in the issue, only 2 had the same grid as Diamond Cut – #1464 Checkerboard Square and #1474 Nine Patch Palette.  Here is Diamond Grid with Nine Patch Palette, and then with the corner squares of Nine Patch Palette recolored.  What a difference!

Diamond Grid didn’t play as well with Checkerboard Square in my opinion.

I also combined Checkerboard Square with Nine Patch Palette, both with and without recolored corners.

I have 3 copies of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 15 to give away, and I will throw in some Shimmer fabrics as well.  For a chance to win one of the 3 prizes, please post a comment on this blog post by midnight tomorrow Friday May 5th telling me which of the 8 options is your favorite.  If you haven’t commented on my earlier post for the Northcott giveaways, please do!

As I write this post, I recall writing a similar post for Volume 13 which came out around this time last year and which also featured one of my blocks.  It was a crazy-busy time, particularly because, while returning to Canada from a Florida vacation, I had to make an unplanned multi-day stop in Paducah, Kentucky to join my colleagues in the Northcott booth at AQS Quiltweek.  I did not have any of the clothes or shoes that I needed to wear at the show (cycling shorts, golf clothes and swimsuits were NOT appropriate), so I called my son at home and walked him through my closet via the telephone as he pulled out the required dresses, matching shoes and jewellery, and Fedex’d them to me.  Remarkably, he managed to select all the right ones!

Enjoy the 100 Blocks blog tour road rally, and be sure to stop at the other designers’ and sponsors’ blogs to enter the rally.  Good luck!

Cheers,

Patti

  25. Marsha May 4, 2017 at 9:19 am #

  40. Mary D May 4, 2017 at 11:24 am #

  41. Barbara Young May 4, 2017 at 11:31 am #

Beautiful block. It’s a tossup between quilts 4 and 5 at the moment. I can’t make up my mind.

  42. Judith Lazo May 4, 2017 at 11:32 am #

I am amazed at the progression of the design from so simple and stunning to very complicated. I love #6, as I seem to end up doing things a bit more complicated than the easier simple designs. They each have their own beauty.

Keep up the great ideas. Always interested to see what you do..

  49. Diantha Howard May 4, 2017 at 12:18 pm #

  70. Glenda McDonough May 4, 2017 at 2:53 pm #

I liked quilt 8 the best.

  73. Joellyn P. May 4, 2017 at 3:28 pm #

I love quilt layout #6 with all the little pieces best, but number #1 with just your block is also nice. I was in Paducah last week, if you had to get stuck somewhere, I’d love to be stuck at the quilt show.

  74. Donna Klein Gebbinck May 4, 2017 at 3:29 pm #

    Love the shimmer fabric line!
    My favorite is Quit #3
    Then Quilt #1
    Then Quilt # 2

  75. Patsy Burroughs May 4, 2017 at 3:30 pm #

Patti, no way is there just one quilt design to love, I love them all? You block is awesome and your use of the fabric makes the blocks just GLOW! Can’t imagine being able to re-create your beautiful quilts without the fabric. Will be going out to get Number 15! Those magazines fly off the shelf and will probably have to search the stores!

  76. Janet T May 4, 2017 at 3:35 pm #

    I like #4 the best.

  77. Kelly Davis May 4, 2017 at 3:43 pm #

  80. glorybquilts May 4, 2017 at 3:59 pm #

I really like quilt option #4. It is elegant.

  81. Rochelle May 4, 2017 at 4:14 pm #

I like this block and the corner squares. I really like the multi color version on the black background the best. Black makes the colors pop!

  82. Pamela Gray May 4, 2017 at 4:15 pm #

I like quilt #3. I like how the white/cream sets off the colors, making them bright without being too bright. Thank you for your block.

  83. Whiskers May 4, 2017 at 4:18 pm #

My favorite is Quilt #1, followed by Quilt #3. They have 3D dimension to them. The more checker board, the flatter the design becomes. And, that you used yellow/gold is unusual. I have learned that a little yellow in a quilt goes a long way, but using it as the sole color against the white background — very nice.

  84. Jayne P May 4, 2017 at 4:27 pm #

It’s difficult to choose with so many options but I really like quilt 2

  85. Pam May 4, 2017 at 4:33 pm #

This looks like a fabric must have in my stash! Great effects. I’m tossed between Quilt 4 and 8, but favouring the strong diagonal lines in # 8 created by recolouring the corners.

  86. Karen Rowe May 4, 2017 at 4:38 pm #

I also like #1…..simple design shows off the fabrics!

  87. Pat K May 4, 2017 at 5:00 pm #

    I think I like #2 the best.

  90. Vicki H May 4, 2017 at 5:33 pm #

I love seeing all the variations. I like #1 the best.

  91. Audrey May 4, 2017 at 5:34 pm #

I love that block. Quilt #1 is my choice

  95. Maureen May 4, 2017 at 6:48 pm #

Although I like the simplicity of quilt # 1, the addition of the colours in quilt # 3 would definitely make a large quilt more interesting. My choice is # 3.

  96. Annie R May 4, 2017 at 6:48 pm #

Layout number 5 is my favorite.

  97. Jolie May 4, 2017 at 6:55 pm #

Hi Patti! I like quilt #5 because it has a secondary jewel and a nine patch that is a basic block that sets of the “Jazzy Jewels!” This quilt has more light background and is more pronounced than in the other quilts thereby giving me a chance enjoy all three of the blocks! I love the yellow and lighter colors so it gives it a soft classy look to the quilt.

  98. Jane Shier May 4, 2017 at 6:59 pm #

It is a very difficult decision to make. Quilt #8 is one of the favourites.

  99. wannajava May 4, 2017 at 7:10 pm #

I liked #1 with the shadows made by using the two colors, I must try that, with blues.
#2 and #3 are also very eye catching, great block in so many ways, thanks for giveaway.

  109. Shirley Jobson May 4, 2017 at 10:01 pm #

  113. Brenda E. May 4, 2017 at 10:57 pm #

The colors of #3 speak to me! I have always liked lots of color especially blue.

  114. Joy P May 4, 2017 at 10:57 pm #

They are all great but I think my fav is #5.

  115. Karen S May 4, 2017 at 11:24 pm #

My favorite is #2. I love how the colors pop against the black background.

  116. Elizabeth Engman May 4, 2017 at 11:29 pm #

Strangely enough I prefer Quilt #3–multicolor on white. Somehow it makes the diamod colors stand out more.

  117. Jo Beard May 4, 2017 at 11:56 pm #

My favourite is #4. It is less cluttered and has lots of interest for the eye

  118. Angela Short May 5, 2017 at 12:00 am #

Quilt 7 is my favorite. Very cool shimmer fabric!! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom

  119. Nicole Sender May 5, 2017 at 12:04 am #

I like #2 the most! The colors stand out with the black background!

  120. Rachell Reilly May 5, 2017 at 12:29 am #

I love #2 and #5…. I love secondary designs and the feel of the Irish Chain that they have. And I adore the dark background option–jewel tones and star patterns pop right out, like stars in a night sky. Especially with the shimmer Artisan. Shimmer and tone-on-tone marbles are my favorite fabrics to work with!

Love the design, lots of movement

  128. Vicki May 5, 2017 at 8:49 am #

Love the variations between the layouts. I like the two-color quilts better than the multi because the 3-D effect is more pronounced.

  129. Monica R. May 5, 2017 at 9:13 am #

  139. Stacey Martin May 5, 2017 at 6:33 pm #

I LOVE #1!! I think it features the block and would allow for some quilting that could make the blocks seem to pop off the quilt even more than they already do. So bike shorts dont work at a show? Haha….cute story. Thank you for the opportunity to win but more importantly….for sharing your talents with the rest of us!

  140. Deborah B. May 5, 2017 at 6:59 pm #
