Alternate Gridwork
Alternate Gridwork is a modern quilting design element that is frequently used by modern quilters, and a tool to help showcase the modern quilting design principles of NEGATIVE SPACE, NO BORDERS, MINIMALISM, ASYMMETRY, EXAGGERATED SCALE, and MODERN TRADITIONALISM. Using an ever-growing stack of quilts, designer Patti will show how you can incorporate alternate gridwork in our quilts to create interest and add energy.
Full-Day Workshops (6hrs)
Simplified Double Wedding Ring – using the simplified pattern in her book, Patti guides the class through the piecing of this classic quilt. (wall-hanging size)
Easy Lone Star – using strip piecing methods, participants will piece a Lone star wall-hanging. Mitered borders are demonstrated.
Fast & Fabulous Bargello Wall-hanging– strip-piece this classic quilt with Patti’s tips & hints.
Free-Motion Machine Quilting – after an in-depth discussion of necessary tools, books, etc., Patti will guide you through 6 different techniques of free-motion machine quilting.
Borders, Bindings and More – Are you deathly afraid of mitered borders? In this technique-based class, Patti will walk you through a variety of tricks for quick professional-looking borders and cover her method for warp-speed binding. There is a $20 kit fee. (All levels)
Stacks of Presents - With Patti’s guidance and tips, conquer angled and set-in seams while making a seasonal wall-hanging. The principles learned in this class can be applied to other quilt projects. Kit fee of $40 includes and pattern and precut strips. Sewing machine required. (Intermediate)
Intro to Improv Piecing – are you curious about modern quilting but don’t know where to start? After a discussion on various modern quiltmaking techniques, you will learn 6 different techniques and make 6 blocks for a lap quilt using fabrics supplied in class. Kit fee of $25. (All levels)
Fractures - Start with a geometric 24” x 42” panel of your choice (or pre-order one from Patti) or a large geometric print, and fracture it, inserting shards of color to create a jaw-dropping contemporary wall/lap quilt. This quilt is much easier than it looks! Pattern fee of $13 is payable to the instructor in class. Sewing machine required.
Winter Solstice quilt - Make your own version of Patti Carey’s iconic Winter Solstice lap quilt, a best-seller featured in McCall’s Quilting magazine. Use 12 values of one color palette for a delectable throw-size quilt, perfect for a stunning wall-hanging, or a queen-size quilt. Busy tonal textures are a good choice to enable one value to blend into the next. You will learn the easy method for Delectable Mountains and the no-waste flying geese method while constructing your quilt with Patti’s guidance. Kit fee: $13 for the pattern
Panel Pizzazz lap quilt 49” x 61” - Take it up a notch and frame a panel or large scenic print with offset flying geese borders. Patti shares her tips and tricks for getting your geese flying in perfect formation. She’ll also demystify partial seams. Kit fee of $13 for the pattern
Skill-building Sampler wall quilt (6-hour) - join Patti in this tip-filled class as you make a 5-block sampler. Learn Patti’s top tricks for quick, easy and accurate piecing. You will leave the class a better, more confident quiltmaker, with a toolbox full of new techniques to use on any quilt project! $30 kit includes pre-cut fabrics.
Star-crossed lap quilt 44” x 44” - Snowball blocks alternate with star blocks to create a diagonal illusion. Showcase some large/scenic prints and coordinates in this eye-catching quilt while learning several tricks for easier, more accurate piecing. Kit fee of $13 for the pattern
Half-Day Workshops (3hrs)
Sashiko – try your hand at sashiko, the traditional Japanese stitching. We will discuss the do’s and don’ts of stitching these classic designs, helpful tools and supplies, and will stitch a sampler of several designs in class. All supplies are provided in the $15 kit. (All levels)

Finishing Touches - Learn professional warp-speed machine-binding. Patti guides you through a variety of binding styles to give your quilts that finishing touch. Kit fee of $10 includes pre-cut pieces so that you are ready to sew. Sewing machine required.
Border Tips and Tricks - In this technique class, Patti shares her methods for getting those borders on your quilts like a pro. Patti will cover flanges and mitered borders (banish your fear of miters!) Kit fee of $10 includes pre-cut pieces so that you are ready to sew. Sewing machine required.
